Raekwon Interview

Words by Andrew Bess

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II

Raekwon has been in the music industry for years. Many of us know him as the Chef, a member of the Wu-Tang Clan or one of the hardest underground mainstream artists out. Whatever you might identify him as, it’s obvious his new album is getting huge buzz in the music industry. Although he shied away from questions regarding the recent Joe Budden beef Raekwon the chef still talked about his new album Only Built for Cuban Linx II, acting and the major producer lineup for the album.

So what types of things are you working on?

Just things like movies, books and music. You know, I’m trying to stay busy.

You have a new album, Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II. What can fans expect from this album?

You can expect classic raw hip hop at its finest, I’m taking it back to where I had no deal and didn’t care what people thought.

This rumors you have some special producers on this album. Who is on the production?

Well you know I got an all-star cast. To name a few: Doc Dre, RZA, J-Dilla, Marley Marl, Pete Rock and the list goes on and on for real!

Talk about being signed to Aftermath.

Well actually I was never signed to Aftermath it was more or less a verbal agreement and you know Dre and Aftermath had a lot on there plate and I couldn’t afford to waste more time but it was pleasure working wit Dre because even if I wasn’t signed with them I still wanted him to be apart of the album.

Can we expect some classic tracks with any of the Wu-Tang members?

Of course, you know you got the classic Rae and Ghost things, and we got the whole fam on it but every time me and my brothers get on a record its classic period.

Tell the fans about IceH20 and the companies goals in the future.

Well IceH20 is my company that I plan to take to the next level with new artist, books, movies and so forth. It’s more like a multimedia brand that I want to take to the next level and put some talented people on.

Talk about your acting roles.

I thought it was time for me to span out and brand myself to a new label and it’s fun going into different roles.

Mack Maine Interview

Words by Andrew Bess

mack4

In the last few years, Young Money has blown up. What’s the secret to the success?

If I told you it wouldn’t be a secret. But hard work is one thing though – really hard work.

You are currently doing a lot of shows. Talk about the touring.

Touring is crazy man. We rocking it in a different city every night..We only have about four more cities left – sold out shows every single place we go. It’s us [Young Money], Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy, Pleasure and Jeremih. You should see Wayne’s live show, he has the band out there and he’s killing it. The Young Money set is crazy. You got to see us if you haven’t.

When can we expect a Mack Maine album to drop?

Like 2012. The last year. The Mayans said 2012 is the last year on the calendar, so probably in the last year. The bible’s book of Revelation. Stupid Macknupid might come out next year though.

Speaking about albums, the Young Money album is on the horizon. Talk about the project and when it will be released.

It’s a classic album and it’s crazy. We’re perfecting it right now and it should be out by the end of this year.

How much creative input do you have with the Young Money album and how many tracks are you on?

The album is completely done so I don’t know how many tracks I’m going to end up on. But right now I’m on three. I have a lot of input on it. I pick who should come on, how they should come on, and I pick beats. Just things of that nature.

On one of the Young Money singles you did some singing. Is that something fans can expect from Mack Maine in the future?

Yeah, that was a song with a Young Money artist named Lil Twist called, “Lets Chill.” Lil Twist is my singing coach (laughs). He inspires me to sing. I’m going to keep singing.

You are shooting the new Young Money video soon right?

The video hasn’t been shot. There was a couple of technical difficulties with the song so it hasn’t been shot yet .We’re looking to shoot it in a few weeks though.

There was some news that dropped that Bow Wow and Omarion signed with Young Money. Put some truth to those rumors. Are they officially members?

Let me clarify the Bow Wow situation. Bow Wow signed to Cash Money Records. Young Money and Cash Money are two different labels but were all under the same umbrella. He’s Cash Money.

But Omarion signed to Young Money but recently parted ways. That’s the nature of the business.

Talk about your label mate Drake. He has caused a lot of buzz in the hip-hop world lately. What kind of artist is he and what is his work ethic like?

His work ethic is crazy, he’s probably in the studio right now recording. He’s his own artist, his own genre and in his own lane. He’s remarkable, he’s different and of course he’s killing the game right now.

Name your top 5 dime pieces in the industry.

Rosa Acosta gets 2 spots. If Rosa is reading this anywhere, she needs to holler at me. Tammy Torres gets a spot, (miss officer) she’s like my sister. Oprah Winfrey gets a spot and the chick from the movie Slumdog Millionaire gets a spot but I don’t know her name. And last but not least, Miley Cyrus. Miley knows she always gets a spot.

Attached are some of the photos I took during the Jay-Z performance in Phoenix, Ariz. for his current concert tour. The press were only allowed to take photos from the sound board which was about 60 yards away from the stage. I left my larger lens in the car so these pictures aren’t my favorite, but they will do. Hope you enjoy.

Shocking Stories

As told to Andrew Bess

I once caught a young alligator with my bare hands. No net and no fishing rod; just patience and a flashlight.

It was Feb. 3, and I was visiting my dad in Tampa, and spotted a gator in the lake behind his house. I lured him in from the middle of the lake by wiggling my finger at the waters edge, like as if I was a hurt frog. I kept a flashlight locked on his eyes, and attempted to stay absolutely still.

I was out there for two nights.

On night one, after three long hours I almost lured him to the shore, but I had to swat a mosquito that was biting me right near my eye. I used my free hand but the flashlight still wiggled ever so slightly, and it spooked him away for the rest of the night.

But this made me realize it could be done.

Night two came around and I came back prepared. I was in a long-sleeved hoody and coated my face and hands with anti-bug lotion. After almost four hours of remaining perfectly still, I lured him in closer and closer. The creature finally crawled out of the water and followed my fingers across the sand. I kept the beam of light locked on his eyes so it basically rendered me invisible. Then, at the very last second, right before he was about to lunge for my hand, I dropped the flashlight in one quick motion and grabbed him with both hands. I made sure I was very careful and grabbed around his face so I could get his mouth shut. You know, a gator that size could take a finger off.

Then I ran back to the house. His tail was slapping the shit out of me the whole way. My stepmom was smoking a cigarette on the back porch as I walked up.

“Oh, my God, Gregory’s got an alligator! Get the Camera!”
